How to find a trusted electrician or plumber near you

A simple 7-point checklist to find a reliable electrician or plumber nearby in India: what to ask, how to compare quotes, and how to pay safely.

Quick answer

Ask for at least three quotes, check reviews from people who actually used them, agree the price and what it includes in writing, and never pay the full amount before the work is done. A short video call or photos of the problem gets you far more accurate quotes.

  • Get 3 quotes and compare what each one includes
  • Photos of the problem = better quotes
  • Agree the price in writing before work starts
  • Pay after the job, or into a safe holding (escrow)

Why word of mouth isn’t enough any more

Most of us still find an electrician by asking a neighbour or the society watchman. It works when you’ve lived somewhere for years. It fails when you’ve just moved to a new flat, when the usual person is busy for a week, or when the “known person” quotes whatever he likes because you have no one to compare with.

The fix isn’t to trust nobody. It’s to have a simple way to check people and compare prices before you say yes.

The 7-point checklist

  1. Describe the job clearly. “Fan making noise and switchboard sparking in the bedroom” gets better answers than “electrical work”.
  2. Send photos or a short video. A plumber can tell a ₹200 washer change from a ₹2,000 pipe job from one clip.
  3. Get at least three quotes. Prices for the same job can differ two or three times between people.
  4. Ask what the price includes. Labour only, or parts too? Visit charge? What if they need to come back?
  5. Check real reviews. Reviews from people who completed a job with that person are worth more than stars on a random listing.
  6. Agree everything in writing. A WhatsApp message or a chat on the task with the price, the date and what’s included is enough.
  7. Don’t pay everything upfront. Pay after the work, or use a platform that holds the money until you confirm the job is done.

Red flags to watch for

  • A price given before they know anything about the problem
  • Pressure to pay the full amount in advance “for material”
  • No name, no address, only a number that keeps changing
  • Refusing to say what is included in the price
  • Asking you to share an OTP or scan a QR code to “receive” a refund

Licensed electricians: when it matters

For small jobs like fitting a fan or changing a switch, an experienced electrician is usually fine. For new wiring, a new meter, a main board change or anything involving the society’s supply, ask for a licensed electrical contractor. Your electricity supplier or society will often insist on it anyway.

How Taskly will make this easier

On Taskly you post the task once with photos and your budget, and people nearby send you offers. You see their price, reviews and a short note side by side, ask questions, and pay into safe holding. The tasker gets paid when you both confirm the job is done.

Common questions

How many quotes should I get for a small repair?
Three is a good number. It shows you the normal price range without taking too much time.
Should I pay a visit charge?
Many electricians and plumbers charge a small visit fee, usually adjusted against the final bill if you go ahead. Ask about it before they come.
Is it safe to pay by UPI?
Yes, as long as you only pay after the work, or into a platform that holds the money. Never enter your UPI PIN to receive money; a PIN is only needed to send.
