Shifting to a new flat in Mumbai: the complete checklist
Moving flats in Mumbai? A week-by-week checklist covering society permissions, lift booking, helpers vs packers, and what to set up on day one.
Quick answer
Book your helpers or movers 7–10 days ahead, get written move-out and move-in permission from both societies, and reserve the service lift for a fixed slot. For a 1BHK within the same area, two or three helpers and a tempo are often enough. Full packers and movers make more sense for bigger homes or longer distances.

Two weeks before
- Tell your current society and ask what they need for move-out (NOC, dues cleared, a form).
- Ask the new society about move-in rules: allowed hours, lift booking, deposit, and tenant paperwork.
- If you’re renting, keep your leave-and-licence agreement and tenant police verification ready; most societies ask for them.
- Decide: full packers and movers, or helpers plus a tempo (see below).

Month-end and weekends are the busiest days in Mumbai. Booking 7–10 days ahead gets you better people and better prices.
The week of the move
- Reserve the service lift at both buildings for the same time window.
- Confirm parking for the tempo with security at both ends.
- Label boxes by room, not by contents.
- Take photos of how your TV, router and appliances are connected before unplugging.
- Keep valuables, documents and medicines with you, not in the tempo.
Day one in the new flat
- Open the “first box”: bedsheets, charger, toiletries, kettle, a few utensils.
- Check every switch, tap and flush before the helpers leave.
- Book small jobs early: fans, curtain rods, washing machine fitting, and a deep clean if the flat needs it.

Agree the full price, the number of helpers and the hours in writing. Pay a small advance only if you must, and the rest after everything is in place.
