How to hire a freelancer for your small business in India
Need a logo, a website or reels for your shop? How to write a clear brief, compare freelancers, set milestones and pay safely, without being burned.
Quick answer
Write a one-page brief with what you need, examples you like, your deadline and your budget. Shortlist three freelancers based on work similar to yours, not just price. Split the payment into milestones and release each part only when you approve that stage.
- A one-page brief saves days of back-and-forth
- Judge by similar past work, not by price alone
- Agree the number of revisions upfront
- Pay in milestones, never 100% in advance
Start with a one-page brief
- What: “A logo and a menu card for a café in Baner”, not “branding”.
- Examples: two or three logos, sites or reels you like, and one you don’t.
- Deliverables: file types (PNG, PDF, editable source), sizes, number of pages or videos.
- Deadline and budget range. A range attracts realistic offers.
How to compare freelancers
Look for work similar to yours: a café logo designer for your café, someone who has edited wedding reels for your wedding reels. Ask how many revisions are included and how long each stage takes. A slightly higher price from someone who has done exactly your kind of job is usually cheaper in the end.
Set milestones
| Example: small business website | Release |
|---|---|
| Design of the home page approved | 30% |
| All pages built on a test link | 40% |
| Site live on your domain, files handed over | 30% |
Each milestone is a point where you check the work and release that part of the money. Nobody works for months unpaid, and nobody pays for months of nothing.
Make sure you own what you pay for
- Ask for the editable source files (AI, PSD, Figma or the project file).
- Your domain, hosting and social accounts should be in your name, not the freelancer’s.
- Get logins handed over at the last milestone.
